Local handicraft markets

Authentic and handmade with care and love, Tonga’s handicrafts are an accurate expression of the gentle and genuine character of the Kingdom’s people. Explore Tonga’s main produce and craft markets for the best examples, or visit the excellent Langafonua Gallery and Handicraft Centre in downtown Nuku’alofa. Most renowned is beautiful Tongan tapa, known locally as ngatu, elaborately-patterned cloth made from the beaten stem of the mulberry tree. Tapa is a traditional indicator of Tonga wealth, and larger examples of this ancient craft can be up to six metres (20 feet) in length and take many months to create. Larger examples of tapa cloth are still sold in local markets, and smaller versions of this Tongan art are very popular as a beautiful handmade souvenir for many visitors to the Kingdom. Also popular are finely-detailed bone and wood carvings, baskets, and beautiful intricately-crafted pandanus mats, woven to exceptionally high standards with skills developed across many centuries. When you purchase Tongan handicrafts, you’re also buying the history and passion of the proud local artist who created the piece.
