Tropical Cyclone Jasmine brought strong wind and heavy rain into the Kingdom of Tonga on Tuesday, 14 February.

Most schools and businesses were closed on Tuesday and Wednesday due to flooding in most parts of the central district of Nuku’alofa.  The rest of the Kingdom including ‘Eua, the Ha’apai and Vava’u group of Islands, as well as the off-shore island resorts in Tongatapu are not affected and business is as usual.  Royal Sunset Resort has reported some minor damage to the island and is closed down for a couple of weeks before opening for business.

Although international flights as well as domestic flights were disrupted on Tuesday and Wednesday, air services resumed normal services today, 16 February, 2012.

Accommodation owners said that apart from fallen trees and flooding they are still operating and receiving guests.  They reported some visitors staying at their accommodation were noted to have said that they did not feel threatened in any way and are enjoying their stay in the Kingdom.
