Diving

Tonga boasts 176 islands, roughly the same number of marine species divers encounter in their first hour exploring the Kingdom’s coral reefs, caves and crystal clear waters. A slight exaggeration maybe, but with sea turtles, manta rays, tuna, marlin and wahoo combining with even bigger creatures like whale sharks, Tonga is a destination that presents underwater thrills on a truly grand scale. Ships that have floundered over the decades on Tonga’s sometimes dangerous reefs sit in unpolluted waters with crystalline visibility up to 30 metres. Equally dramatic are the underwater landscapes waiting to be explored, experienced and photographed. Pristine coral gardens shimmer amid the ebb and flow of tropical currents, while labyrinthine coral reefs are studded with swim-throughs, caves and arches. Tonga’s volcanic past, present and future are showcased with underwater tunnels, ancient lava tubes and massive drop-offs down dramatic 25-metre cliffs. For divers, Tonga is a diverse and complex destination where every dive and every day can be remarkably different. Look forward to exploring some of the richest and most diverse ecosystems on the planet, and from June to November underwater exploration often comes with the living, breathing soundtrack of murmuring whalesong from courting humpback whales. With water temperatures ranging from 23ºC to 29ºC, migrating pods of humpbacks are annual visitors escaping the frigid waters of the Antarctic. It’s a climate-defying strategy that’s equally valid for intrepid human visitors from other parts of our planet.
