Tonga introduces star-grading system for tourism accommodation
Tonga ‘s Minister responsible for Tourism today released details of Tonga Mark ™, a new independently assessed quality star grading system. Tonga Mark™ grades all tourism accommodation businesses each year against internationally benchmarked quality criteria and includes an independently moderated annual update assessment.
Hon Dr. Viliami Uasike Latu, Minister for Commerce, Tourism and Labour released details of the programme and the first year’s grading results. He said ‘Tonga Mark ™ grades tourism accommodation in four categories:
4. Guest House
These classifications will make it easier for our guests and for the travel industry who sell Tonga holidays to understand the services and facilities on offer in Tonga. In addition each business is now also rated on as either One star, Two star, Three star, Four star or Five star. Each business is now required to display their star grading certificate in their reception area, and we are about to add grading to all our marketing communications including accommodation listings on the Tonga Visitors Bureau website”, he said.
The star rating results are now being supplied to the travel trade so that all international sellers of holidays to Tonga also have details.
All accommodation businesses will be reassessed each year to ensure gradings are always up to date. Between October and December 2012 the next assessments will commence a new report and star rating result will provided to each business in January 2013. It is also planned to extend the programme to transport, activities and attractions later this year, for release in 2013.
Dr Latu said: This is the beginning of a new way of ensuring that we deliver a higher quality visitor experience in Tonga. Over time Tonga Mark ™ will stimulate an increase in the overall quality of all visitor accommodation here. Already some accommodation businesses are making investments in upgrades in readiness for their next assessment”.
