At sea level, the sheltered reefs, islands and atolls of the Kingdom of Tonga are individually spectacular. Seen from a higher vantage point, the combination of verdant forest, translucent azure sea and shimmering white sand is simply stunning. Especially if you’ve just emerged from lush, pristine rainforest onto a dramatic cliff top lookout. Well-marked hiking trails dot the beautiful national parks on the island of ‘Eua and the northern Vava’u group, guiding hikers through some of Polynesia’s finest treks. Volcanic caves combine with postcard-perfect beaches, and mandatory stops include swimming in remote waterfalls and gazing upon an 800-year old banyan tree. An occasional soundtrack is the call of the Koki, the red-breasted musk parrot. Visitors with a keen eye might spot one on ‘Eua. Adventurous trips combining trekking, kayaking and camping are also possible on the Va’avu and Ha’apai island groups, with friendly local guides joining visitors in exploring untouched atolls and remote volcanoes. Overnight stays are usually on deserted beaches, prime viewing locations to experience stunning sunrise and sunsets.
